Pemberton, NJ man charged with Murder, Assault after shooting two 17-year olds
A Pemberton Township man has been indicted on several charges including Murder in the death of a 17-year old boy in Browns Mills while also severely injuring a 17-year old girl.
Kai Johnson, 18, was in an argument with 17-year old Malachi Treherne of Pemberton inside the house and then all of the sudden, Johnson pulled out a gun and shot Treherne and a 17-year old girl there with him, according to Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina.
Pemberton Township Police responded to the shooting around 11:30 pm on October 18, 2021 and found Treherne lying in the doorway to the home.
He was pronounced dead at the scene from what an autopsy confirmed was two gunshot wounds to the head.
The 17-year-old girl he was with, who was shot in the chest, was brought to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton following the shooting, and she has since been released from care.
Prosecutor Scott Coffina said that Kai Johnson was indicted for fatally shooting both teenagers, while on the 100 block of Snow Avenue in Browns Mills.
Johnson, in full, has been charged him with 1st-Degree Murder, 1st-Degree Attempted Murder, 2nd-Degree Aggravated Assault, 2nd-Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, 2nd-Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and 3rd-Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
He has been lodged in the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly since turning himself in to police three days after the shootings and is being prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Jamie Hutchinson.
