I wish a week had passed when I didn't have to share the news of a retailer closing, but that seems to be the trend for 2025.

While retailers are struggling, it's been absolutely brutal for chain restaurants.

Establishments like TGI Fridays are closing up shop left and right. Recently, we caught word of the Toms River Fridays closing its doors.

If you want to open a business, a restaurant is one of the most challenging endeavors.

The chance of success is tiny, and new restaurant owners must be able to live off savings for at least two years before seeing a profit.

These days, locally owned New Jersey family restaurants seem to be making out better than the chains.

This goes along with some news that I came across today.

Chain restaurants are especially struggling with Millennial and Gen Z customers.

Apparently, these groups prefer local eateries to big chain restaurants, even if it's more expensive to dine.

Red Robin is the latest chain restaurant to feel the heat over changing customer dynamics.

According to Newsweek, Red Robin operates 495 locations nationwide. Twelve of those locations are in New Jersey.

Red Robin was down $39.7 million in 2024, which caused the need to close what they call "underperforming stores."

Newsweek reports that as many as 70 locations will disappear in 2025.

As of this writing, the burger joint hasn't announced which New Jersey locations will get the ax.
