South Jersey Residents Warned About Court Scam Texts

There's another scam you need to be aware of that's been going around South Jersey, but of course, it could easily spread anywhere.

That's the thing about these scams, they often don't stay in one area.

Law enforcement agencies are warning residents about fake text messages claiming to be court notices, according to Patch.

The texts mention things like a court appearance for a traffic or toll violation and even include a QR code for payment to avoid an upcoming court appearance.

What makes this one especially concerning is how realistic it looks; scammers are getting pretty good at this. They're even using a QR code, which would make payment very easy, so if you're distracted, I can see how people could accidentally fall for it.

What To Do If You Receive A Fake Court Text Message

Patch reports:

If you receive a message like this, do not respond, verify the notices through an official court or county website, and report it as spam on your phone, along with blocking the number. Courts do not send summonses out via text messages, Medford Police added.

The sad part is that just as soon as you find out about this text, scammers are already working on something else, a new way to take someone's money.

Just always be alert, and again, never give out any personal information if you get a message like this!
