The Longest Traffic Lights in Monmouth and Ocean Counties
There's nothing worse than sitting at a light that seems to stay red forever.
We're taking a look at the longest stoplights around the Jersey Shore!
One of the worst I can think of is inland Monmouth County:
Rt. 520/Newman Springs Rd. at Rt. 34 on the Colts Neck/Holmdel border.
If you're on 520, this light stays red for an eternity. It's even worse if you're heading west, and the person in front of you is making a left turn, but doesn't hug the yellow line...meaning you can't get by, and will likely have to sit through the light AGAIN.
The jughandle light to make a left from Rt. 66 east towards the Seaview Square Mall in Ocean.
When the radio station was located at the Seaview Square Mall, I used to dread that light. It wasn't as bad during the day, but in early morning or late night hours, I would drive around the circle just to avoid that light!
Rt. 35/Maple Ave. and Broad St, at Rt. 520/Newman Springs Rd. on the Red Bank/Shrewsbury border.
This light is awful largely because of the train tracks, but even when a train isn't rolling through and shutting down the intersection, there are still multiple streets, including what's technically a highway, all intersecting in one spot.
It's especially terrible at rush hour. The worst!
Rt. 9 at the bus stop between Wickatunk Rd. and Taylors Mills Rd. in Manalapan
Right in front of Castle Couture (remember when that was Excelsior?) on Rt. 9 in Manalapan is one of the worst lights ever. There's no cross street, but it's right in front of a bus stop. When there's actually a bus there, and the light stays red because there are people crossing the highway, it's totally understandable...but anyone who's ever been stuck at that light when there's no pedestrians around knows that light seems to stay red forever!
Rt. 166/Main St. at Rt. 571/Indian Head Rd. in Toms River
If you ever need to turn left from Rt. 166 north to Rt. 571 west...well, be patient. It doesn't help that there are always a ton of cars in that spot, and it can add a good 10 minutes onto your trip!
Hooper Ave. at Rt. 37 in Toms River
I don't know if it's the sheer volume of cars, or if it's the light itself, but whenever I'm driving in the area of this intersection, I know it's going to take anywhere from 5-15 minutes to get through it. I find it's especially bad if you're heading north up Hooper. Brutal.
