Two English women charged with stealing baby stroller in Middletown
Two women from England who allegedly stole a baby stroller and left a child behind in Middletown have been arrested by police.
Investigators say a group of three women and children entered Bambi Bay on Route 35 August 16 around 6:00 pm in Middletown.
One of the women went to the front of the store to grab the stroller, while the other two distracted an employee.
One of the women then returned after realizing they left their child behind.
"I had a couple of customers in the store, and then three women walked in behind another customer," Bambi Bay Store Manager Justin told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. "Two of them distracted me, and then one walked out with the stroller. And then a couple minutes later, one of them comes back in because they left their child in the store."
The stroller has since been returned following the arrest of the women but not before a whole ordeal unfolded.
The store manager recounted the incident further by telling ABC 7 Eyewitness News that he confronted one of the women when she returned.
"I (noticed the stroller was gone), however, I didn't want to jump to conclusions, so I definitely walked around the store first and then started checking the camera and then noticed the stroller had been taken," Justin said. "And then right before I called the cops, the girl had come walking back in to retrieve the child. And at that point after she had walked out, I said, 'Hey, I'm pretty sure you guys stole my stroller. I'd like it back.' And she just kind of ran off, and at that point I dialed 911."
Middletown Police Detectives were able to locate two of the suspects in Eatontown and placed them under arrest.
Maryann Cash, 23, of Surrey, England, and Nan McCarthy, 20, of Effingham, England, were both charged with shoplifting and conspiracy.
It's not known if the third woman involved has any charges pending.
The investigation is still ongoing and if you have any information you're asked to contact Middletown Township Police Detective Keith Hirschbein at (732) 615-2120.
