Work could soon be getting underway this summer for a new Grawton Road Bridge in Jackson Township.

The Ocean County Freeholders have found a contractor to build the new span which will be 36-feet wide with two 12-foot travel lanes and with a precast concrete culvert and concrete wing walls.

The structure will be built on steel-pipe piles with concrete footings.

The new span replaces a 30-foot wide aging wood structure built in 1936 that carries traffic over the Dove Mill Branch of the Toms River.

Ocean County Freeholders are expected to award a $1.6-million contract to Marbo, Inc. for the new span.

“This work is part of our continuing effort of improving our county road system, which is the largest in the state,” Freeholder Director Virginia Haines said.

Haines and Freeholder Deputy Director John Kelly are co-liaisons to the Ocean County Engineering Department.

“We are constantly monitoring our roads and bridges to ensure that we have the safest possible road network here in Ocean County,” Kelly, who is also Director of Law and Public Safety, said.

A full detour around the bridge will be in place for the duration of the construction, which is expected to last about six months.

The project also includes the installation of NJ DEP mandated terrestrial animal crossings on each side of the main culvert.
