The First Drive In Movie Theater Was Right Here In New Jersey

There was one particular piece of movie history that happened right here in the Garden State. We are talking about the country's first drive-in movie theater.

Lots of important firsts happened right here in New Jersey, like the first college football game and much more.

But when it comes to one of the greatest inventions for the movie business, it's all about the first drive-in movie theater, and according to History, that happened right here in the Garden State.

The story behind the first drive-in movie theater is a pretty amazing one. It was called the Camden Drive-In and it was located on Admiral Wilson in Pennsauken.

And the story behind it is a pretty cool one, too. It all got started when Richard Hollingshead wanted to help his Mom out. She had a very difficult time being comfortable in traditional movie theater seats.

He first started by experimenting in his driveway and before you know it, his dream was a reality. On June 6, 1933, the movie-watching experience changed forever when cars pulled into the Camden Drive-In for the first time to catch a movie.

According to PBS, the movie that played on that fateful day was a British comedy called Wives Beware.

The popularity of drive-in theaters was at its peak in the 1960s and 1970s and now it is just a novelty at best, but what a fun experience it was for those who got to give it a try.
