Regarding sandwiches, there are the typical offerings and truly culinary craftsmen.

Plenty of places in New Jersey are known for serving huge portions, but a sandwich doesn’t earn the title of “best” based on size alone.

It’s about more than just being big—uniqueness, quality ingredients, and attention to detail.

Size is important, but it’s only part of the equation.

Recently, Food Love's foodie website compiled a list of America’s top breakfast sandwiches, and the pick for New Jersey was unexpected.

You thought the good old-fashioned pork roll, egg, and cheese on a bagel was coming. So did I.

No, this time, the foodie team chose a schnitzel sandwich.

According to All Recipes:

A schnitzel sandwich is made with schnitzel, breaded, and fried meat and served on bread with various toppings. Schnitzel sandwiches can be made with chicken or pork, including toppings like lettuce, mayo, mustard, and cabbage slaw.

You will often find schnitzels for lunch and dinner but not breakfast.

That's where Mordi's Schnitzel in Jersey City comes in.

The breakfast schnitzel is made with sharp cheddar, adding a bold and rich flavor.

Next, there’s perfectly crispy bacon that’s cooked just right.

Then comes the fried egg, flipped to avoid any runny yolk, keeping everything clean and balanced. Add in fresh tomatoes and a special garlic aioli (which is just a fancy way of saying mayo with a kick), and the flavors start to come together.

But the real star is the schnitzel itself. This crispy fried chicken isn’t too thick, which is crucial because the balance of textures makes this sandwich stand out.

The schnitzel adds enough protein and crunch without overwhelming the other ingredients.

Then, there’s the bun. Mordi uses a challah bun. It’s soft and slightly sweet and the perfect complement to the rich and savory elements inside the sandwich.

While Pork Roll, egg, and cheese may be New Jersey's official breakfast sandwich, there's nothing wrong with mixing it up.

If you want to add variety to your breakfast routine, Mordi's Schnitzel is the way to go.
