Could This Latest Round Of Snow Break Records For Monmouth County, NJ?

Two times is a charm this week for Jersey Shore when it comes to 2022 snowfall just the first work week of the new year. Today's snow is not a huge amount, but it's certainly enough to mess up the morning commute. So why are we talking about Monmouth County records?

It turns out that this second snowfall of the new year may bring enough snow to topple the record for this date in, not one, but two different weather stations in Monmouth County. Here's what we mean.

All of this data is preserved on the website of the New Jersey Office of the State Climatologist. The daily extremes are recorded at two separate weather stations in Monmouth County.

One of those is Long Branch and the other is Freehold, so they do give us a pretty good picture of what happened inland and along the coast on any given day. and we all know how different especially snowfall can be the closer you get to the coast.

So, since the snow started yesterday, and continued to this morning, we'll have to take a look at both dates in the record books, and here's what we uncovered.

Let's start with Freehold. The record snow accumulation for January 5th in the history books happened in 1980, and that was 2 inches. The record for January 7th in Freehold happened a year later in 1981 when we got socked for 4.6 inches.

And checking out Long Branch, we were surprised to find that the coastal town had higher snowfall records than the inland town on both dates, although different years.

Long Branch's record for snow on January 6th is 4.5 inches in 1979. And for January 7th, the record books show the highest total at 8.3 inches, which happened just a few years ago in 2017.

So will any of these records fall with the current snow? No official numbers are out yet, but we'll be the first to let you know.
