If you're like a lot of New Jersey residents, the first thing you might think of is the governor, but Phil Murphy is not the highest paid state employee in New Jersey. Well then, who is. Hint...think sports.

Of all the people who crossed your mind, did the Rutgers football head coach cross your mind? Well, if  Chris ash, the Rutgers football head coach was your guess, then you got it right, according to gobankingrates.com.

And across the nation, this is not uncommon at all. According to the article, its true for most states in America. When it's not a head football coach, the top paid public employee is usually a dean of a university or someone in the medical profession.

For the record, gobankingrates.com says Ash made $2.1 million in 2017, and has an $11 million contract that runs through early 2021.
