Protect Yourself – Items You Must Have When its Below Freezing in New Jersey
We may not be able to get rid of the cold weather, but we can be prepared for it.
Today (January 11th) it was a balmy 23° out, and it looks like we're in for the same this upcoming Saturday. Gross. We're also only 11 days into January, so who knows if we could be hit with more below-freezing temps this winter. It's better to be safe than sorry, right?
There are lots of things that can go wrong when temps fall below freezing. Your car could get stuck if there's snow or ice. A power outage may happen in your home, which would make the heat stop working.
So how do you stay prepared in case of a cold-weather emergency? Keep reading to find out the items you definitely want to have.
Items you should have in your car in below-freezing weather
The almanac website was very helpful for referencing what we should keep in our cars during the winter. Obviously, some items we already know about, like car scrapers, shovels, windshield cleaner, and jumper cables - things you'd normally carry with you. But there were some other items on the list you may not have thought of, like blankets, extra socks mittens, and hats, a flashlight, even bottled water! I'll be adding these to my car ASAP.
Items you should have in your house in below-freezing weather
House Method shared what you should keep in your Winter Home Emergency kit, and there are obviously some duplicate items from the car kit, like bottled water, blankets, and flashlights. They say you should also have non-perishable items, a battery-operated radio, and a fire extinguisher.
I would also add having the 92.7 WOBM app downloaded to be aware of winter weather before it hits!
Hopefully, we'll never have to encounter serious emergencies, but in case we do, we're all a little better prepared to handle them.
Stay safe!
