Beach erosion is real. But when I see these dunes being build like sandcastles along some beach fronts in Belmar and Spring Lake...I wonder if these little hills have any affect against the power of the ocean.

It can't hurt, of course, to try and form a battlefront of dunes as a layer of protection between the ocean and the roads and homes along our shoreline...

... but do you really feel any safer? Sure we don't want to lose any more sand along our beaches, so maybe piling it up will save some of it. And maybe it'll break up some waves during a storm.

But it just makes me feel that in the battle of storm vs. dune...Mother Nature is laughing at our little mounds of sand. We are so small compared to the enormous power of the winds and sea.

Yet we sure do love the beauty of living near the ocean.
