Thoughts On Improved QR System For Jersey Shore, NJ Restaurants? But It Could Jeopardize Our Servers
Over the weekend, I stumbled upon a new idea that could be very useful for our Jersey Shore restaurants as we ride out the rest of this COVID-19 Pandemic.
But there is a catch: this idea could also do more harm than good for our servers in the long run.
Let me explain.
My sister Jessica and I visited the third Murray sister, Alyssa, at her new apartment in Brooklyn. One of our sisterly activities was bottomless brunch at a place called Ainslie.
It was BEAUTIFUL....outdoor dining available in the front and the back with flowers everywhere and we got so lucky with the weather.
When we sat down at our table, I was met with a familiar sight.
Since COVID-19 hit, I think we have all seen one of these QR codes at restaurants so the same set of menus do not have to be reused by people over and over all day.
But this one was a little different because when you scanned the code, you could not only view the menu....but order AND pay for the bill at the end of your meal.
So here are the positives: servers and other restaurant staff can spend less face-to-face time at their tables which is huge right now with COVID-19.
Plus, servers can avoid touching people's credit cards and cash because payment can be handled on each person's individual mobile device.
But the negatives: what happens when COVID-19 is a thing of the past? Is implementing a system like this going to put our servers in a bad position because two major parts of their job are now being done by technology?
Another big part of being a server is having a personality and just making your guests feel welcome and amp them up to have a good time...especially at a place with bottomless mimosas!
But restaurants are only bringing on a portion of their regular staff for their day-to-day business and it feels like fewer people are being forced to handle the same workload.
Our guy was running left, right, up., down and all around so I almost wonder if this system works to his benefit...at least for now.
Part of me thinks that for now, there are more positives than negatives.
