We are going to be dealing with cold temperatures and plummeting wind chills throughout this week as well and these conditions can become a dangerous and expensive problem when it comes to your pipes.

My wife and I woke up yesterday morning to no hot water. The first fear of course is that a pipe had burst. Fortunately, I have a friend who happens to be a great heating and plumbing guy, who got some guys over to the house to check it out.

Fortunately for us, it was just some ice stuck in the pipes. It could have been worse. I thought it would be good to share some tips for avoiding these problems from the Red Cross.

Here are some things you can do according to experts...

(1) If you have water supply lines in the garage, make sure the garage doors stay closed.

(2) Let the water trickle out of your faucet during really cold weather. It helps prevent the pipes from freezing.

 (3) Keep kitchen and bathroom cabinets open to let warm air circulate around pipes and plumbing, but be sure to keep cleaners and chemicals out of the reach of the kids and pets.

(4) Keep the heat the same temperature day and night during the really cold spells.
