So the New Year has begun here in New Jersey and we’ve done it again, We’ve made a little promise to ourselves called a New Year’s resolution. Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?

Every year, we get caught up in the tornado or the black hole called New Year’s resolutions. We make these clearly impossible promises to ourselves because we fall for the tidal wave of optimism that a new year brings.

Don’t get me wrong, we should be optimistic about a brand new year, especially after the past few years that we’ve all had to endure. From the economy to politics, to a pandemic, nothing has been easy for any of us.

So why in the world would we come out of the gate of a brand new year by laying an unrealistic promise right across our already burdened shoulders? I don’t know, but like thousands of you, I seem to do it every time.

It doesn’t matter if it’s quitting a bad habit, losing some weight, exercising more, being a nicer person, or being a better driver, we all know our resolution is well-intended but also doomed right from the beginning.

We checked out some research, even though deep down, we already know how this is going to work out. A study reported in the New York Post revealed that the average New Year’s resolution will meet its demise on February 1st, but that over two in three people will have already abandoned their resolution prior to that day.

That means if your resolution makes it to February, you’re better than most and definitely better than me.

But you have to love the optimistic spirit a new year brings, especially at a time when we could all use a double dose of optimism, so go ahead and make that resolution. Maybe we’ll all surprise ourselves a little this year.
