This was a tough week for me, and I wasn't sure if I would share with all of you the reason why, but after some consideration, I felt it necessary.

This week's cocktail is in honor of my Grandpa Dom, who I'm sad to report passed away last weekend.

Words can't really describe how I feel about him, but suffice it to say, he was the greatest man I've ever known. Calm, strong, smart, a damn good cook, and funny as hell...a true gentleman.

I've written about him several times before, all of which started with the very funny reason why Grandpa drinks, namely why he made himself a screwdriver one day at 2:30 in the afternoon.

And so this week, I will ask all of you to make a simple screwdriver in memory of a great man, who will be missed very much.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz vodka (any kind you have)
  • 3-6 oz. orange juice

Add vodka to a glass filled with ice, top with juice, and stir. Obviously use more or less juice or vodka to suit your taste.

Cheers, Grandpa.

Grandpa Dom was 93 years young, and after living most of his life in Brooklyn, lived in Manalapan for nearly 20 years. He’s an Army vet, worked as a butcher for many years, then worked as a technician for the US Postal Service. A widower, a father of two, grandfather of four, great-grandfather of two…he will always be the man.
